New Era’s, demand New methods.
“Go to school, get good grades, go to post secondary, get a diploma or degree, so you can get a good job.” - Almost Everyone.
Anyone else romanticise this load of male-bovine-faeces in their youth? I want to take a walk through the generations, challenges, struggles, opportunities and blessings. Followed with some tips that can (and hopefully will) change your perspectives.
Silent Generation 1928 - 1945; My Grandparents; lived through major technological breakthroughs, war, economic collapse, and the economic boom of the 60’s.
Baby Boomers 1946 - 1964; (My Parents) Post-war born, or born during major domestic growth. Partied in the 70’s and 80’s, had strong economies to raise their families as they exited their twenties.
Gen-X 1965 - 1980: (Many of my siblings), We all know about latch-key-kids, roaming the streets until the streetlights came on, and all the 80’s and 90’s kid-fun that was had. Already adults when Y2K happened, the War on Terror, and had to adapt to the rise of the internet.
Millennial 1981-1996: (Some of my siblings, and myself), were children when going through the Y2K “crisis preparation", watched 9/11 happen in high-school, witnessed the birth of the high speed internet, smart phones, and the digital era.
Gen Z 1997 - 2012: (My nieces/nephews & 1 child), Have grown up in the digital era, witnessing the rise of A.I., the COVID pandemic, and the economic collapse of north america.
Gen Alpha 2013 - Now: (My youngest 3 children), Are experiencing a world that has access to limitless information, social media and entertainment.
If you compare each generation, their struggles and experiences; you will come to realize: The “age old formula of success”, stopped working in the mid 2000’s. When people could make consistent income from YouTube videos. 2024 is coming to it’s end, just like peoples desire to become a trades-person, or professional. When it’s easier to make jokes on Twitch while gaming, or sacrificing your privacy on shadier platforms; The world needs career oriented people, but the careers are changing faster than the educational system can keep up.
Gone are the days of walk-in interviews (mostly), as most businesses have application processes that use algorithmic vetting systems (i.e. the Applicant Qualification Screening System), which can literally find the “perfect” candidates or inadvertently, hide the “perfect” candidates, because they’re missing specific keywords on their application.
The evolution of our workforce, has been surpassed by the system’s own adaptation; and I wanted to share some tricks to those who are struggling in their career or life goals!
Keep Growing! Nothing is ever wasted, every experience, upset, defeat and failure, helps make you better; so long as you keep learning!
Think outside the box! We live in a world where demands grow and change so rapidly, there is potential in almost every industry.
Optimize: Just like SEO for a website, you can optimize your Resume/CV, to illustrate your responsibilities, rather than your job-title.
Network! It’s not what you know, it’s who you know. Build real relationships with your network, because they might know something you would be perfect for, but only if you are honest with them.
Lose the bad ego: Don’t be too proud to ask for help, support, or guidance. A lot of the time, the greatest gatekeeper to success: Is ourselves, be it through pride or fear.
May the rest of November bring you peace and abundance in preparation for the chaos of the December Holidays!
