Inspirations for Life: CONNECT!
By Deb Powell
Winter months can be challenging. Especially, if we don’t like cold weather and we live in those areas. If that’s you, then you need to know this: We need to stay connected. If we don’t, we can get lonely, depressed, and sick.
We are wired to connect. No matter if you like to a little, or a lot, our health depends on it.
If we can’t get out much, we can still connect with people. We can call loved ones, or neighbours, or have a friend in for a visit.
We also need to keep our minds working by learning new things. Try playing a musical instrument, drawing or painting, researching a faith, cooking something different. Get some plants, do puzzles, learn to knit… be adventurous, you never know what you’ll discover.
If we can get out we can volunteer, help someone, visit family, friends or neighbours, go for walks, sit on the front porch, play a sport, visit a park and watch people… it’s fun!
Make it a point to get outside every day even if it’s 5 or 10 minutes on your front step. Breathe deeply and get the sun on your face. Shut your eyes so the brightness goes into your brain, it combats depression.
Make goals. Start a project. Be a pen-pal to someone far away; pick a place you’ve always been interested in. Exchange letters with a grandchild or a lonely prisoner, it may brighten up their day…
Move! Do exercises, yoga, stretches, walking on the spot, qigong, climb stairs, or dance (the most fun!)… but MOVE! Your health depends on it!
When we are alone too much we lose our value and our purpose… we are needed… somewhere… by someone… find them!
Get a buddy (someone to be accountable to) it’s very important (and they may need you too). We can be alone, but we don’t have to be lonely.
No matter what you believe about what’s going on in the world, don’t let it stop you from living! Choose to be happy, find joy in something, reach out - CONNECT - we need others.
